Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Preview

In a recent interview, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 director Guillaume Broche teased a franchise for the beloved game.

It looks like the expedition is not done, so Sandfall Interactive is continuing. In a recent interview, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 director Guillaume Broche teased a franchise for the game. Broche described the RPG of the year as intended to be part of a series, in a talk with MrMattyPlays, as reported by The Gamer. It turns out that Clair Obscur was not just a short reference for the longer name of the game.

Talks have been surrounding Sandfall Interactive and their next game plans. “Clair Obscur is the franchise name. Expedition 33 is one of the stories that we want to tell in this franchise,” Broche told MrMattyPlays. “Exactly what it will look like and what the concept will be is still too soon to announce, but what is sure is that this is not the end of the Clair Obscur franchise.” Broche continued talking about his process for writing sequels, too.

CGMagazine’s Chris de Hoog spoke with Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’s Lead Writer and Voice & Localization ProducerJennifer Svedberg-Yen, and Lead Game Designer, Michel Nohra, back on April 21, 2025, about building out this world. Svedberg-Yen spoke about the French term “chiaroscuro” and how this was a major theme across the game’s philosophy. Svedberg-Yen ended their answer stating, “We sincerely hope that players enjoy our game, and if there is demand for it, then ‘Clair Obscur’ could very well be the umbrella title for a larger series!” Hints and nuggets of information were already teased even before the game dropped.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

In CGMagazine’s 10/10 review of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, our review described it as such: “The story juggles expectations and emotions so masterfully, I can’t believe it’s the studio’s first title. Everything pulls together exquisitely in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33‘s back end, where even some sillier moments that I wrote off as simply relieving the tension end up resonating for their own reasons. And even now, a day after rolling credits, I’m still sitting with the weight of its ending.”

I know this game has changed me, too, and has become a part of so many conversations this year. Everyone is asking if this game will win Game of the Year. The chances are very high, as the game even had a musical performance at the recent gamescom 2025 Opening Night Live.
